Power Hour

 
 

We make time for what is most important to us, such as when our child is hurt and needs to go to the hospital, and yet many of us have a belief that “we don’t have time.” The reality is we always have time. It’s our choice how we spend it.

 

One myth that keeps us a victim of time is that multi-tasking is effective. Let’s clear this up right now, it’s NOT!

 

Multi-tasking has been scientifically proven to be ineffective.  

In today’s tech heavy world, we don’t focus and we do too many things at once.  

We also aren’t efficient or effective when we stay seated too long.  

Are you spinning your wheels on many things partially without completing tasks?  Is your attention dispersed?

 

SOLUTION: Take Responsibility by doing a Power Hour.  

  • A Power Hour consists of concentrated chunks of time in 20 minute intervals.  Our brain pulses in intervals throughout the day, and you can achieve peak performance by working in pulses rather than trying to focus for overly extended periods of time.

  • Before you begin the Power Hour, put away all distractions - silence your phone, turn off email notification or close your laptop, close out of all browsers not needed to complete your task. 

  • Next, spend 20 minutes COMPLETELY FOCUSED on your most important task.  At the end of 20 minutes, take a 2 minute break.  Stretch, move, breathe.  

  • Then do another 20 minute interval.  Followed by another 2 minute break. Stretch, move, breathe, take a bathroom break.

  • Complete three of these 20 minute intervals in a row, and then take a 10-15 min break at the end.  During this longer break, do something completely unrelated to work. Go for a short walk, call a friend. Let your mind disengage. 

  • That’s one Power Hour (more like 85 minutes total).  

  • When doing a Power Hour, it can be helpful to create a ritual or find a sacred space where you can work uninterrupted.  You may want to leave your open office space and go to Starbucks or work in a conference room for an hour.  Find a quiet place where you won’t be disturbed.  

  • Do your Power Hour first thing in the morning, you will be amazed at how efficient you are!
